On January 22nd, express your style and join in the celebration of National Polka Dot Day, which honors one of animation’s most famous characters and fashion icon, Minnie Mouse!
#NationalPolkaDotDay
Polka dots are designs made up of spots on fabric, first mentioned in the 1857 Godey’s Lady’s Book, a popular women’s magazine from Philadelphia.
These dots are no longer limited to just clothing; they now appear on walls, nails, pottery, phone cases, furniture, baked goods, and paper goods. We wear them, decorate with them, and even eat them!
Minnie Mouse is a timeless figure known for her signature polka dot look, typically featuring white dots on a red background, though she’s also seen in pink variations. Other famous figures linked to polka dots include:
- Shirley Temple wore a red-and-white polka dot dress in the 1934 film Stand Up and Cheer, evoking a Minnie Mouse vibe.
- Marilyn Monroe wore a chic black-and-white polka dot dress in The Seven Year Itch.
- Julia Roberts dazzled in a white-and-brown polka dot dress in Pretty Woman.
- Roy Lichtenstein, a famous pop artist, incorporated polka dots in his comic book-inspired works using the Ben Day process.
- Yayoi Kusama, a renowned artist, has made polka dots a central element in her paintings, sculptures, and installations.
